ICMR says HMPV is already circulating in India; no unusual national surge seen in ILI/SARI so far
With concern rising around Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV), ICMR has said the virus is already in circulation globally, including India. The agency said current surveillance data does not indicate an unusual nationwide spike in influenza-like illness or severe respiratory illness.

The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) said Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) is already circulating globally and in India, while stressing that the country is equipped to respond if respiratory illness trends rise.
Current surveillance signals
- ICMR said routine surveillance has detected cases and that monitoring continues through established networks.
- Based on ICMR and IDSP-linked data, the agency said there has not been an unusual surge in ILI (influenza-like illness) or SARI (severe acute respiratory illness) nationally.
The update follows reports of detected HMPV cases in Bengaluru, identified via routine multi-pathogen respiratory surveillance.
