Suspected Nipah cases in West Bengal prompt Centre to deploy national outbreak response team
Two suspected Nipah virus cases reported in West Bengal triggered an immediate public-health response, with the Centre deploying a joint national team to support containment, surveillance and laboratory work alongside state authorities.
Health authorities stepped up surveillance and containment measures in West Bengal after two suspected Nipah virus cases were identified, prompting the Union government to deploy a National Joint Outbreak Response Team to assist the state’s public-health response.

The report said the suspected cases were detected on 11 January 2026 at a Virus Research and Diagnostic Laboratory (VRDL) run under the Indian Council of Medical Research at AIIMS Kalyani. Given Nipah’s high fatality risk and its potential for rapid spread, the situation was treated as a priority, with officials focusing on early isolation, contact identification and risk communication.
The deployed team includes experts from multiple institutions, including epidemiology and virology bodies, local public-health organisations and wildlife-related departments—reflecting the zoonotic nature of Nipah and the need to track possible animal-human links. Coordination aims to strengthen testing capacity, ensure consistent reporting and support containment protocols on the ground.
Authorities also shared guidelines with the state’s disease surveillance machinery to help standardise case management, infection control and community measures. The immediate objective is to prevent wider transmission through fast contact tracing, quarantine where required, and heightened hospital infection-prevention practices.
Nipah remains a serious concern because it can cause severe illness and has been associated with outbreaks requiring rapid, coordinated responses. Officials have repeatedly emphasised that early detection and strict infection-control practices are critical to limiting spread, especially when cases are suspected in healthcare-linked settings.
