KOLKATA: Health authorities in West Bengal are working to contain a Nipah virus situation after two confirmed cases were reported in Kolkata. Both patients are healthcare workers, triggering intensified surveillance and rapid contact tracing.
According to official monitoring updates, the cases were confirmed through RT-PCR testing by designated laboratories, and both were hospitalised in intensive care. A national joint response team involving the Union Health Ministry and the state government was deployed to coordinate containment steps.
Officials expanded testing among identified contacts and moved high-risk contacts into quarantine, while epidemiological investigations began to determine how the infection was acquired and whether there were any additional chains of transmission.
Public health teams have been focusing on two priorities: (1) preventing hospital-linked spread by reinforcing infection-control protocols and (2) ensuring community reassurance through transparent updates.
