West Bengal is facing a Nipah virus alert after multiple cases were reported in January 2026, including infections among healthcare workers linked to a private hospital in Barasat, North 24 Parganas. Reports said two nurses were among the earliest confirmed patients, with at least one described as being in critical condition, prompting an aggressive public-health response focused on isolation, surveillance and contact management.
A later update reported five cases in a week, including additional healthcare staff, as authorities widened testing and shifted some patients to specialist infectious disease facilities. The response has included quarantine or home isolation for contacts, along with efforts to map exposure chains across hospitals and households to prevent further spread.
Nipah is treated as a high-concern pathogen because it can cause severe respiratory illness and encephalitis, and outbreaks demand fast containment. Health officials have emphasised precautions such as strict infection-control practices in clinical settings, careful monitoring of symptoms among contacts and timely reporting of suspected cases.
Authorities are expected to continue case finding, laboratory confirmation and risk communication.
