West Bengal reports Nipah virus cases; contacts quarantined as health teams step up response

Health authorities in India have confirmed Nipah virus cases in West Bengal, triggering an intensified public health response that includes contact tracing, quarantines and expanded testing. The cases have raised concern because Nipah is associated with severe disease and has no widely available cure or vaccine, making early containment critical.

According to the reported account, the infections involved two nurses at a private hospital near Kolkata, with one said to be in a coma. Officials believe the exposure may have occurred while they were caring for a patient with serious respiratory symptoms who later died before testing, and that patient is being treated as a suspected index case pending investigation.

As part of containment measures, authorities initiated quarantine and testing for contacts and expanded surveillance in the area. The report said that as of 20 January, 180 people had been tested and 20 high-risk contacts quarantined, with tests so far returning negative among those screened. Health officials have also mobilised national agencies, including the National Centre for Disease Control, to support the response.

Investigations have extended beyond the hospital setting. Because fruit bats are often cited as a likely reservoir for Nipah, authorities have also looked at potential animal links, including testing efforts involving bats at Kolkata’s Alipore Zoo, as part of a broader attempt to understand possible transmission pathways.

Public advisories have focused on precautionary behaviour—reducing exposure to potential animal sources, following hygiene practices such as washing fruits thoroughly, and using protective measures where appropriate. While officials have urged calm to prevent panic, the response has been positioned as urgent due to the virus’s potential severity and the importance of stopping any person-to-person spread early.
