West Bengal reports two suspected Nipah cases; Centre deploys joint outbreak response team
Two suspected Nipah virus cases have been detected in West Bengal, prompting the Centre to deploy a National Joint Outbreak Response Team to support containment and public health measures. The suspected cases were identified at an ICMR VRDL in AIIMS Kalyani, with central agencies sharing guidelines and supporting state surveillance, contact tracing and testing.
Two suspected Nipah cases detected
West Bengal has reported two suspected cases of Nipah virus disease, triggering an elevated public-health response and central support. The suspected cases were detected on 11 January 2026 at the Virus Research and Diagnostic Laboratory (VRDL) of the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) located at AIIMS Kalyani.
Given Nipah’s history of high fatality and its ability to spread through close contact, health authorities have treated the development as a priority containment situation, focusing on rapid testing, surveillance and contact tracing.
Centre deploys National Joint Outbreak Response Team
Following the detection, the Centre deployed a National Joint Outbreak Response Team to assist the state government with containment and public-health response measures. The team includes experts from multiple institutions, including the National Institute of Virology (NIV) Pune, National Institute of Epidemiology (NIE) Chennai, AIIMS Kalyani, and other public-health and wildlife-linked agencies.
Authorities also said that guidelines on Nipah Virus Disease have been shared with the State Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP) under a communicable disease alert framework, aiming to standardise reporting, isolation protocols, and risk communication.
