Nipah cases trigger containment push

West Bengal has confirmed Nipah virus infections, prompting quarantine of close contacts and heightened surveillance, according to a Times of India report dated 27 January 2026. The report said authorities identified around 100 close contacts who were placed under quarantine as containment measures expanded.

The report also said some infections were linked to hospital transmission, increasing concern about the safety of healthcare settings and the importance of strict infection-prevention protocols. In response, travel screening measures were being reinforced at airports and border crossings across parts of Asia, the report added.
