CPI raises security concerns ahead of September 1 rally in Delhi

Communist Party of India (CPI) General Secretary D. Raja has written to Union Home Minister Amit Shah seeking intervention over alleged house arrests and harassment of CPI workers and local leaders in Uttar Pradesh ahead of the party’s All-India Rally in Delhi on September 1, 2026.

In a letter dated August 31, Raja stated that CPI workers and leaders in several districts of Uttar Pradesh were being targeted by the police as they prepared to travel to Delhi for the rally at Ramlila Maidan. The letter raised concerns over the suppression of democratic rights and the right to peaceful assembly.

Raja urged Shah to ensure that the rights of party workers and leaders were protected and that they were allowed to participate in the rally without hindrance. A response from the Union Home Minister was awaited.

CPI’s rally agenda

The CPI has been mobilising for the ‘Badlaav Zaroori Hai’ rally, which is focused on unemployment, price rise, farmers’ and workers’ rights, social justice, democracy and federalism. The rally is scheduled to be held at Ramlila Maidan in Delhi on September 1.

The party has called for political change amid what it describes as deepening economic, social and democratic crises in the country. Its mobilisation efforts in Uttar Pradesh have been met with resistance, according to the concerns set out in Raja’s letter.

The letter places the alleged police action ahead of the Delhi rally in the context of the CPI’s efforts to bring workers and local leaders from Uttar Pradesh to the event. The party has asked the Union Home Minister to intervene and protect their ability to attend.
