India’s 77th Republic Day parade at Kartavya Path spotlights 150 years of ‘Vande Mataram’, with EU’s top leaders as chief guests

A national celebration with a diplomatic spotlight

India celebrated its 77th Republic Day on Monday, 26 January 2026, with the main national parade held on Kartavya Path in New Delhi. President Droupadi Murmu presided over the ceremony and unfurled the Tricolour as the national anthem played and a 21-gun salute followed, reflecting the formal constitutional significance of the day and its military traditions.

This year’s celebrations carried an added theme: 150 years since ‘Vande Mataram’ was first written and later became one of the most powerful cultural expressions of India’s freedom movement. The focus on the song’s anniversary ran through the day’s motifs, messaging and tableaux, tying heritage to the modern national narrative.

The chief guests were European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President António Costa, visiting India from 25 to 27 January at the invitation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Their joint presence was widely read as a deliberate political signal of deeper India–EU engagement, especially with summit talks scheduled immediately after the parade.

Military and cultural elements on the boulevard

The parade showcased marching contingents, ceremonial units, and thematic presentations that combined security messaging with national development imagery. The Kartavya Path route—running from Rashtrapati Bhavan towards the National War Memorial—remained the focal corridor, where dignitaries and invited guests witnessed the main programme.

Alongside the defence and paramilitary elements, the event also highlighted cultural diversity and state-led narratives through floats and performances. The overall structure followed a familiar Republic Day format—ceremonial precision mixed with high-visibility public spectacle—while placing extra emphasis on a shared national symbol: ‘Vande Mataram’ as a historic call of unity.

The presence of both EU leaders as chief guests was framed as a marker of the “growing strength” of India–EU partnership, with the next day’s summit expected to address trade, strategic cooperation and security.

With public attention fixed on the parade and the summit track running in parallel, Republic Day 2026 blended ceremony with statecraft: a constitutional anniversary at home and a relationship-building moment for India’s external engagement.
