PATNA: The Rashtriya Janata Dal on Sunday appointed former Bihar deputy chief minister Tejashwi Yadav as its national working president, a move the party pitched as a generational transition as it reworks strategy and organisation ahead of key political contests.
The decision was announced at the opening session of the RJD’s national executive meeting in Patna, where party chief Lalu Prasad Yadav formally handed over the appointment letter to his son in the presence of senior leaders. Former chief minister Rabri Devi was also present.
The newly created role is expected to give Tejashwi greater day-to-day control over the party’s organisational machinery and routine decision-making, effectively strengthening his authority while Lalu Prasad Yadav remains the supremo.
However, the elevation also carried a family-political edge. Tejashwi’s sister Rohini Acharya publicly criticised the development, suggesting that the transition reflected internal intrigue and warning of a ‘conspiracy’—comments that added friction to an announcement meant to project unity.
For the RJD, the appointment is as much about messaging as structure: projecting a younger leadership face while retaining the party’s traditional centre of gravity. Whether the new post translates into sharper electoral performance will be tested on the ground, especially in Bihar’s polarised landscape.
