Maharashtra civic polls: BJP-led alliance crosses majority in Mumbai’s BMC as state results reshape local power map
In Maharashtra’s civic elections, the BJP and its ally Shiv Sena (Eknath Shinde faction) together crossed the majority mark in the 227-member Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, ending decades of dominance by the undivided Shiv Sena legacy. The BJP-led Mahayuti alliance registered a decisive showing in Maharashtra’s civic polls, including the high-stakes Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) election, a contest closely watched as a barometer of urban political mood and party machinery. In Mumbai’s 227-member civic body, the BJP won 89 seats and ally Shiv Sena (Eknath Shinde faction) secured 29, taking the combine past the 114-seat majority mark.
The outcome is politically significant because control of the BMC is not just about municipal governance; it is also about power, patronage, networks and influence in India’s financial capital. The results effectively ended a long era in which the Shiv Sena’s broader political tradition was seen as the natural centre of gravity in Mumbai’s civic administration.
Opposition parties still retained meaningful footholds, with the Shiv Sena (UBT) winning 65 seats and the MNS taking a smaller share, but the arithmetic left the BJP-led alliance with a clear advantage to govern the cash-rich corporation. Beyond Mumbai, the BJP’s statewide performance across multiple municipal corporations reinforced the scale of the organisational sweep.
The civic results also carry forward-looking implications for state politics: they strengthen the governing alliance’s narrative of momentum and undercut opposition claims of resurgence in key urban centres.
